JD Twitch of Optimo Music recasts Jeremy Deller’s steel band cover of “Voodoo Ray” back into a a stone-cold banger. Check out the video now.

Continuing his love affair with acid house which saw the Turner prize winning artist Jeremy Deller cover the genre’s most important tracks with a brass band for the seminal 1997 project Acid Brass (to be celebrated by Warp records at Tate Britain this December), Deller this year turned his attention to Trinidadian steel bands to put together an EP of cover versions to accompany his English Magic show at the Venice Biennale’s British pavilion.

Among them was A Guy Called Gerald’s “Voodoo Ray”, which received a wispy, dreamlike make-over and became the unofficial soundtrack to the summer’s Venetian festivities. Now, bringing the anthem back into the environment for which it was first intended, JD Twitch has remoulded Deller’s cover into a bubbling and joyous, piano-led house banger, that came top of FACT’s Singles Club on the week of release.

Check out the video now, lay your hands on a copy of the remix here, with cover designed by Deller himself, and a copy of the original English Magic EP here.
