A meditative journey through Caterina Barbieri’s Vigil.

Deep Listening is a series in which The Vinyl Factory spins monumental albums and songs, both contemporary and classic, in the Devon Turnbull Listening Room at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb Exhibition in 180 Studios.

A listening room created by New York artist Devon Turnbull and programmed by The Vinyl Factory, the space allows visitors to listen to music on a handmade, high-fidelity sound system. Its plush, minimalist interiors have enthralled visitors to The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition and played host to events with The Blessed Madonna, Stephen O’Malley, and many more.

Our latest instalment takes us back to The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition, which took place at 180 Studios earlier this year. Italian composer and producer Caterina Barbieri’s Vigil, released on vinyl by VF in 2024, is a lush, tender soundscape conceived for Barbieri’s collaboration of the same title with long-term creative partner, artist Ruben Spini.

Vigil at Future Shock, 180 Studios

Barbieri, best known for her modular synth compositions and electro-acoustic experiments, is the current Artistic Director of the Music Department for the Venice Biennale and has performed at festivals from Unsound to Primavera, and venues including Pompidou and Southbank Centre.

Originally presented at 180 Studios’ 2022 Future Shock exhibition and more recently at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb, the Vigil composition was originally released under the title “The Landscape Listens” on Barbieri’s album Spirit Exit.

The VF release of Vigil features artwork taken directly from the installation, bringing together the visual, musical, and sculptural elements that connect to Barbieri’s idea of music as a gateway to transcending time and space.
