The Japanese artist unveils a new large-scale audiovisual installation commissioned by 180 Studios.

180 Studios will host the world premiere of Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda’s latest installation, data-cosm [n°1].

Opening October 15, the new commission transforms data from nature into a large-scale immersive experience.

Described as “a total sensory encounter that transforms vast datasets into an immersive audiovisual environment, exploring the intersection of art and physics on an unprecedented scale,” data-cosm [n°1] invites visitors to lie beneath a vast LED ceiling while being enveloped by Ikeda’s soundscapes. The installation “charts the full spectrum of data in nature – from the microscopic world of particle physics to the macroscopic scale of astrophysics.”

Building on the foundations of Ikeda’s acclaimed data-verse trilogy — a series of works that translated complex scientific information into sound and image — data-cosm [n°1] is another entry in his ongoing exploration of the intersection between art and science.

Ikeda built his name on an extreme, minimal approach to sound. He elaborately orchestrates sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions into immersive live performances and installations. Both celebrated as a composer for albums including +/- and Dataplex and as an artist for installations such as test pattern and supersymmetry, he is revered across visual and sonic media.

Over the past decade, Ikeda has developed a close relationship with 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory. Their collaborations began with supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in 2015, and in 2021, 180 Studios hosted the largest exhibition of his work to date, featuring large-scale installations and data-driven projects from across his career.

Ikeda has also released multiple vinyl editions through The Vinyl Factory, including technicolors, Music For Percussion, The Solar System and Live at White Cube, a collaboration with Christian Marclay.

data-cosm [n°1] runs from October 15 to December 21 at 180 Studios, 6 Surrey Street, London WC2R 2ND. Book your tickets now via the 180 Studios website.
