Deep Listening: Voodoo Ray by Jeremy Deller & Melodians Steel Orchestra
Melodians Steel Orchestra's cover from a classic Jeremy Deller release.
Deep Listening is a series where The Vinyl Factory presents landmark albums and songs—spanning both contemporary and classic works—inside the Devon Turnbull Listening Room at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition in 180 Studios.
Designed by New York artist Devon Turnbull and programmed by The Vinyl Factory, the room invites visitors to experience music through a handmade, high-fidelity sound system. Its plush, minimalist setting has become one of the highlights of Reverb, hosting intimate listening sessions and special events with artists such as The Blessed Madonna, Stephen O’Malley, and many more.
In our most recent instalment, we listened to a classic VF release from acclaimed artist Jeremy Deller. In 2013, the label collaborated with Jeremy Deller on the soundtrack to his new film, shown in the British Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale. Recorded at Abbey Road, the English Magic soundtrack featured three classic British works: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Symphony in D Minor,” A Guy Called Gerald’s “Voodoo Ray,” and David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World”—covered by the Melodians Steel Orchestra, a South London–based ensemble with English and Trinidadian roots.
The Melodians performed live at the Pavilion’s official inauguration, and later that evening at The Vinyl Factory’s legendary party on Venice’s Isla Vignole.
