The Vinyl Factory at The Store hosts pop-up record shop and after party.

Before it opened its doors to the general public, New York’s Paradise Garage club held a number of ‘construction parties’, inviting a loyal crowd to the small, raw space to experience the beginnings of what would become its legendary sound system. In that vein, The Vinyl Factory Soundsystem at The Store Studio in Berlin was given a test run last week as Massive Attack dropped in to takeover the space for four days.

Upstairs at The Store, a pop-up record store opened, selling a number of limited edition copies of Massive Attack’s new EP Ritual Spirit hand-printed by Robert “3D” Del Naja alongside other Massive Attack / The Vinyl Factory releases. Across the city, the band took to the stage at Berlin’s Tempodrom for a typically iconoclastic audio/visual live show.

Heading underground for the after-party, Phonica Records’ Simon Rigg and Roi Perez and Berlin DJ and producer Henrik Schwarz gave The Vinyl Factory Soundsystem a proper seeing to, testing the “surround-style” 8-speaker stack for the first time in front of an intimate audience.

Not yet fully open to the public, the Soundsystem at The Store Studio has been hand crafted by Funktion One and can be configured for surround and 3D sound, as well as stereo, with residents and guest commissions lined-up to push the parameters of sound within the space; a set-up which engineer Phil Key calls “one of the finest sound systems ever made”.
