Take a piece of data-cosm [n°1] home with you.

The Vinyl Factory has announced the release of data-cosm [n°1], the score to Ryoji Ikeda's ongoing installation at 180 Studios, on vinyl.

Commissioned and produced by 180 Studios, Ryoji Ikeda’s site-specific audio-visual installation is a unique immersive experience charting the full spectrum of data on nature – from the microscopic scale of particle physics to the macroscopic of astrophysics.

Building on the foundations of Ikeda’s acclaimed data-verse trilogy — a series of works that translated complex scientific information into sound and image — data-cosm [n°1] is another entry in his ongoing exploration of the intersection between art and science.

Ikeda built his name on an extreme, minimal approach to sound. He elaborately orchestrates sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions into immersive live performances and installations. Both celebrated as a composer for albums including +/- and Dataplex and as an artist for installations such as test pattern and supersymmetry, he is revered across visual and sonic media.

Limited to 1000 copies worldwide, the record holds Ikeda's 17 minute soundtrack and is pressed on 180gm heavyweight black vinyl with a die-cut outer sleeve, a full colour inner sleeve and artwork by Ikeda, taken from the installation itself.

The Vinyl Factory and 180 Studios have been collaborating with Ikeda since 2015, when The Vinyl Factory staged
the UK premiere of Ikeda’s audio-visual installation supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in Soho, London. 180 Studios subsequently exhibited the Ikeda’s iconic interactive work test pattern, drawing over 100,000 visitors to 180 The Strand in 2017.

Four years later, 180 Studios commissioned and produced Ikeda’s largest-ever European exhibition, featuring over 10 artworks, creating an unrivalled immersive experience across two floors of the building that drew both critical acclaim and record numbers of visitors.

Speaking about data-cosm [n°1], Ikeda explained “It’s a composition, like a song. I compose sound into music, and I compose pixels and light into video.”
