Watch: Haseeb Iqbal on spiritual jazz
Dig deep into the world of spiritual jazz with Haseeb Iqbal.
"Sun-Ra said to him, "I want to hear your mistakes. When you make a mistake, play that mistake with your heart and turn that mistake into something special".
Broadcaster and DJ Haseeb Iqbal returned to The Listening Room at 180 Studios for a deep-dive session exploring the foundations and evolution of Spiritual Jazz and, now, it's available to watch in full above.
Recorded around Devon Turnbull’s custom hi-fi system with a live audience, the intimate event traces the genre’s key movements.
From the early days with Sun Ra’s legendary 1966 record Nubians of Plutonia through to a rare release from Sandra Douglass, Haseeb charts one of the most impactful and influential jazz movements of all time and shares insight into a sound built on improvisation, faith, and resistance.
Iqbal’s selection highlights both landmark recordings and lesser-known releases, sharing stories and personal anecdotes about the music of John Coltrane, Yusef Lateef and much more.
Speaking of his experiences as a resident host at The Listening Room, Iqbal recently told VF: "It’s theatre meets sound system culture meets storytelling. It’s brought my love of poetry, theatre, and music together.”
